Surprise Tips for Job Candidates Going into Highly Competitive Fields
If you are in the process of looking for a new job, you know by now how many moving parts there can be in the process.
But I bet there are some things that you haven’t thought about but that
Making certain changes will go a long way to making you stand out. This is especially important if you are in a highly competitive field or seeking a job with a $100K+ salary.
The LOOK of your resume matters as much as what’s on it
First, in dusting off your resume, you’ll need to update not only your work history but also the look and feel of the resume.
You don’t want to project anything that suggests that you, your experience, or your knowledge is in any way outdated. So that may mean changing the font, organization, etc. of your resume to be more in line with what is expected today.
For example, Times New Roman, the font which was for many years viewed as the standard for looking professional and polished now makes you seem stodgy and outdated.
This might feel trivial, but the truth is…
With literally hundreds of applicants for a job, employers are taking into account EVERY aspect of your application when determining who to weed out.
Likewise, you also need to consider the look and feel of your Linkedin profile. You might have put your profile up 3 or 4 years ago (or maybe longer!) and haven’t touched it since. But these days your Linkedin profile
Often potential employers will look at that profile to confirm that it is reflective of what’s in your resume.
Or they will look to see some of the areas that might be listed on the profile that
And sometimes they might look at it more broadly to get a sense of what you know about technology or social media just by the way that you’re using that profile. So it is important to update that as well as your resume.
As you know, so much about the hiring decision is about fit. If you’ve crafted your resume and Linkedin profile properly then on paper you will look like an ideal candidate.
Employers know this, so it’s very common for them to find out more about you on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or whatever social media platforms you may be
So, do you want your dream employer to come across that time when you wrote that long, ranting FB post that day you were up until 3:00 a.m. doing all the work that nobody else was doing, take it out of context and assume it means you’re the type of person that disparages your employer or doesn’t want to work hard or whatever?? I’m guessing not.
Ensure that potential employers don’t have access to everything and would need to be a friend or follower or otherwise connected to you in order to see the details of your social media. If it can’t be blocked, then delete, delete, delete.
Making these adjustments to your job search process will yield HUGE returns in getting your resume viewed by potential employers and getting you in for interviews – I promise!
