3 Simple Ways to Stand Out at Work
If you are going to work day after day, doing everything that is asked of you (and then some), and still feel like you – and everything you do – is invisible to the powers that be, then read on!
These 3 tips will help you to not only be more visible at work but also to actually stand out and shine.
Bring some of yourself to work
If you have a sense of humor, a weird hobby, a fascinating personal life, or whatever, don’t be afraid to share that part of yourself (within reason!) in the office. Corporate can be…um…boring at times.
You bringing some levity and light and interest into space can make you stand out and as someone folks like to have around. That will play in your favor big time during fiscally difficult times, when project teams are being formed, and when promotions are up for grabs.
Communicate in person
Between Outlook and Jabber and that oh-so-antiquated desktop phone, there are tons of ways to communicate with your colleagues without ever actually having to see them. (Hey, even WebEx can be conducted with the video turned off.)
And while each of these modes of communication can be used effectively to relay the necessary information or get your point across, nothing works better for making actual connections than speaking to someone face-to-face. It fosters relationship-building, it allows you to analyze body language and, in a world where most are trying to avoid face-to-face contact, it will make you appear more personable and more of a team player than your peers.
Be a connector
You know how you feel when someone introduces you to that key player, right? It’s like you’ve been tapped to come off the bench and (finally!) get in the Big Game. (Can you tell I have the Super Bowl on the brain??) When you have the opportunity to do that for someone else – a peer, a mentee, your boss(!) – do it. Doing this helps the people in your networks develop strategic relationships that they otherwise may not have made. And helping them in that way helps you…a lot!
As those relationships develop and bear fruit, the people involved will be extremely grateful to you and, in most cases, will want to return the favor.
The fact that you are sharing your network will make you stand out as someone who genuinely cares about your boss, the company, and the organizational culture. In that way, you will be seen as a rare gem, and will always be top of mind for key opportunities when they arise.
Doing any or all of these things at work will elevate you above your peers and make sure that you are seen as the superstar you are. And who doesn’t want to be seen as a superstar, right?

NOTE: You’ll notice I didn’t include “do great work” or anything along those lines in this list. That’s because, if you are a part of my community you’re already consistently doing this. After all, ‘great work’ is the price of admission for high-achieving corporate women. Not only do we know that we must be doing this, we actually enjoy it…as long as we are being appreciated for it and we aren’t burning out and sacrificing the rest of our lives in the process.
